LIGHTHOUSES

Annisquam Lighthouse

This lighthouse was erected in 1801 to mark the entrance to the Annisquam River. The river connects Ipswich Bay to Gloucester Harbor. The tower is 45 feet high. Its flashing white light can be seen from 11 miles away. The fog signal blasts every 60 seconds. The keeper's house was also built in 1801 and on the grounds there is a stone oil house as well as a garage. Only the grounds are open to the public. The lighthouse is located in Annisquam Village. To reach the lighthouse take Washington Street (Rte. 127 N) about three miles after the rotary. Take a left onto Leonard Street at the Annisquam Village Church. Take a right onto Norwood Heights. When you reach the fork in the road, bear right. Follow the road around to the left and take a right at the end of the road. Enter the lighthouse parking lot through the gate on the left. Parking is limited to 15 minutes for viewing and pictures. You can also view this lighthouse from Wingaersheek Beach.
Ten Pound Island

This lighthouse is located in Gloucester's outer harbor and was erected in 1821 to mark the island and entrance to the inner harbor. It is only accessible by boat. The tower is 57 feet. Its signal can be seen from a distance of 5 miles. The fog signal blasts every 20 seconds. On the island is also an oil house. It is on Ten Pound Island that Winslow Homer painted.

Eastern Point Lighthouse and Dogbar Breakwater
This lighthouse was erected in 1832 to mark the entrance to the harbor. The current brick tower was built in 1890. It is 57 feet high. The flashing white light can be seen from a distance of 24 miles. The fog signal blasts every ten seconds. The keeper's house was built in 1879. There is also an oil house and garage on the property. Grounds outside the fenced area are open to the public. A path along the ocean provides access to Dogbar breakwater. To reach Eastern Point Lighthouse, take East Main Street past Niles' beach. Turn in at the stone pillars marked private. You are permitted to drive through to go to the lighthouse. There is a parking lot by the lighthouse in which you can park. Parking, however, is limited. This is the lighthouse shown in the movie, "The Perfect Storm."

Thacher Island Twin Lights
Although technically in the town of Rockport, the twin lighthouses of Thacher Island are visible from Good Harbor Beach and most of the back shore.
Standing one hundred and sixty feet above the sea, they have stood guard over the coasts of Cape Ann, Massachusetts since 1771. For more information on visiting Thacher Island see their web site.
